Measurement tools

How to use angles, percent slope and the other measurement tools.

2.1 preview — version 2.0 is currently on the App Store. The new tools below are coming in 2.1.

Angle & slope

Read a shelf’s angle in degrees or the ratio of rise to horizontal run as a percentage. Choose the horizontal or vertical axis. Percent slope is not another name for degrees.

Surface level

Place your phone with flat contact against the surface. Bringing both axes toward zero helps you check it in two directions. A case or camera bump that raises the phone can affect the reading.

Target angle

Choose an axis and a target angle. The indicator shows the difference between that axis’s reading and your target. Keep the contact edge and phone orientation consistent between measurements.

Camera alignment

Align your frame with a live camera guide and read both directions of the phone’s tilt. This tool does not measure an object’s angle, distance or depth from a photograph. Camera permission is needed only for this screen.

Hold & the 3-second timer

Hold a reading when the screen is awkward to reach. Start the timer and leave the phone steady; the reading is held when the countdown finishes. Tap the same control to cancel the countdown. Resume returns to live readings.

Recent measurements

Held readings include both axes, measurement type and date/time, stored locally on your device. A camera entry stores the phone’s attitude, not a photograph. Delete entries from the recent-measurements screen.

20 seconds of both axes, surface level, target angle, the timer and history. Silent video with explanations included on screen.

Degrees and percent slope are different

Percent slope = 100 × tan(angle). It is rise divided by horizontal run. A rise of 10 cm over a 1 m horizontal run is a 10% slope, or approximately 5.71°.

Percent slope8.75%

This calculator uses no sensors. It accepts angles strictly between −90° and +90°. At 90°, horizontal run is zero, so there is no finite percent slope.

Questions while measuring

Is a 45% slope the same as 45°?

No. A 45° slope is 100%. A 45% slope is approximately 24.23°.

Does setting a reference improve accuracy?

A reference makes a chosen angle your comparison point. It is not a calibration that independently verifies sensor accuracy.

Does camera alignment measure the object’s angle?

No. The camera is a visual guide; both displayed angles are calculated from your phone’s motion sensors.

Why can’t I find the new tools in my downloaded app?

This page shows a 2.1 preview. The current App Store version 2.0 includes both axes, reference angles, alignment haptics and appearance controls. The new tools become available when 2.1 is released.

Readings are calculated from your phone’s motion sensors and are approximate. Surface contact, a case and device conditions can affect them. Use an appropriate physical measuring instrument for work that needs verified accuracy.
